The Use of Contextual Video to Improve Students' Listening Ability
Hai guys !
Well, today I will tell
you about the gap between the first journal that I have reviewed before “The
Use of Songs in Teaching Students’ Listening Ability” and the second journal
that I will review later “The Use of Contextual Video to Improve Students’
Listening Ability”. So what are the similarities and differences between both
of them. Let’s discuss below !
The first, the
similarities from both of them such as they have the same skill that is
Listening skill. They also have the same purpose that is to improve students’
listening ability. Moreover, the researcher are from the same colleague. The last
similarity is the sample of the research are the second grade of Junior High
School.
The second is the
differences from both of them. The first journal is used the songs to find out
their ability in listening comprehension and the second is used the contextual
video to find out the effectiveness in listening comprehension. So the
conclusion, the gap between the two journals are only in the method.
In addition, now, I will
start to review the second journal. The title is “The Use of Contextual Video
to Improve Students’ Listening Ability”. Here, I just want to review some of
the parts in the journal. Those are introduction, literature review and the last
is methodology. And from rest of the parts, I will share next week in another chapter.
Introduction
The researcher said
that the teachers nowadays should have an attractive way to take students’
interest and encourage students’ participation in learning process. Because one
of the problems here is about the students’ attention that can be distracted
easily. So that, the audio visual method is recommended to be used and it is
more effective than the other types of media for listening. In audio visual,
the students will use the two of their multi sensory that is sound and sight at
the same time when they are doing listening practice.
Literature
Review
In this part, the
researcher explain about the teaching approach in listening and the benefit of
contextual video. In teaching approach in listening, the researcher said that
there are two major of approaches. Those are bottom up and top down. each of
them has several objectives to assess in listening. However, it depends on the
teacher. They can decide what kind of approaches are appropriate by thinking
about the kind of listening skill they want to teach. In addition, the
researcher also gives the explanation in the benefit of contextual video. The
use of contextual video may give lots of advantages in learning a foreign
language. There are a lot of benefits that mentioned by the scientist but the
conclusion here is video or film associates with relaxation. Students have to
be provided by good viewing and listening task, so that they may give their
full attention to what they are hearing and seeing. Students can watch a huge
range of film clips or short video on the internet at sites such as You Tube.
Methodology
The researcher takes
two classes to applied the pre test and post test by implementing the
contextual video to find the effectiveness in listening. Pre test is used to both
groups to find out the students’ initial listening ability, whereas post-test
were given to both groups to measure whether there is a difference between
students’ listening score. Also the researcher use questioner to find out the
students responses toward the use of contextual video for listening practice. Furthermore,
to find out the effectiveness of contextual video in listening practice paired
t-test was applied. If the probability value is smaller than the sig. value at
0.05 ( p<0.05), it means contextual video was effective for listening
practice.
Thank you π and see you
on my next review next week! π
